Bursledon Cemetery - Residents Guide

Bursledon Cemetery is a lawned cemetery to reflect the rural character of the cemetery, meaning each plot is grassed over with no other adornment. A single Memorial Headstone is permitted. Following a burial, plots are returned to lawn status in preparation for the installation of the memorial.

Only current Bursledon residents (or those with close family already buried there) can be buried in Bursledon cemetery.

Permission from Bursledon Parish Council who own the cemetery must be obtained for a burial to take place. Both full burials and burials of ashes can take place in the cemetery.

To obtain permission please contact Bursledon Parish Council. Council staff will help you to purchase an Exclusive Rights of Burial or confirm who is the legal owner of the Exclusive Rights of Burial for an existing plot. An Exclusive Right of Burial grants you permission to inter one full size burial and up to eight ashes burials. You also have a right to place a memorial on a plot subject to the payment of the relevant fee and the memorial complying to the cemetery regulations.

A formal application for burial must be made in addition to having an Exclusive Right of Burial. Again Parish council staff can help with this application and agree a suitable date for an internment, giving the appropriate amount of time for staff to make the necessary preparations.

No burials can take place without all the relevant forms and corresponding fees being received by the Parish Council who are the Burial Authority. As the Burial Authority all matters relating to an interment at the Cemetery planned either by the owner of the Executive Rights of Burial, associated Funeral Directors or Stone Masons must be authorised by Bursledon Parish Council.

Following a full burial a memorial cannot be installed for 12 months. Following an Ashes burial a memorial cannot be installed for 3 months. This is to ensure the ground has settled and the memorial can be installed safely. A TEMPORARY marker cross can be installed until a full memorial is permitted

Contact with Bursledon Parish Council at each stage is strongly recommended. Only the owner of the Exclusive Rights of Burial can be engaged with directly therefore Funeral Directors, Stone Masons or others must have the consent of the owner of the ERB to act on their behalf.

Bursledon Parish Council owns the Cemetery and remains the owner of all burial plots and is responsible for their maintenance.

Exclusive Rights of Burial are valid for a period of up to 75 years.

Only the owner of the Exclusive Rights of Burial can apply to erect a memorial. The memorial must comply to the Councils Cemetery Regulations and must be fitted in the ground by an approved stonemason. Only a qualified BRAMM or NAMM memorial mason can install a memorial.

Leaving natural flowers are welcome. Planting of flowers directly on the plot is not permitted.

Payments to Bursledon Parish Council can only be paid by Bank Transfer.
